Kookaburra Friends (Public Art) by Jennifer Reid

Stepping into the realm of public art for the first time is both exhilarating and deeply grounding. Being part of Sunburst – Camden Kerbside Exhibition 2025, presented by Alan Baker Art Gallery in collaboration with Camden City Council, feels like a meaningful milestone – an opportunity to see my work live and breathe beyond the studio.

In 2025 (and still currently), I’m exhibiting two pieces that mark my foray into public art: my Cockatoo & Kookaburra Friends. These illustrations celebrate the expressive nature and social presence of two of Australia’s most recognisable birds. Set among layered botanical forms, the compositions explore their distinctive silhouettes and lively personalities through a balance of fine detail and stylised design.

Working with a palette of soft neutrals, punctuated by considered accents of colour, I aimed to create a quiet warmth – an atmosphere where connection takes centre stage. The birds exist not just as subjects, but as companions, engaged in subtle, familiar interactions that reflect their intelligence, curiosity and charm.

There’s something uniquely powerful about encountering art unexpectedly – on a street, at a kerbside, woven into everyday life. Sunburst invites that kind of discovery. I’m thrilled to contribute to a project that brings art into shared spaces, where it can spark moments of pause, recognition and connection within the community.

Be sure to visit in the streets of beautiful Camden village before the exhibition comes down in May 2026!
