Lately I’ve been wondering how to describe my art style…it’s hard to look at your own work objectively. So I asked around and finally came upon 3 words that make me smile when I think about how people see my designs…
- Whimsical
- Enchanting
- Joyful
It’s funny that those words came from others, because that’s exactly what my heart is aiming for when I create work and put it out into the world. It’s like baring your inner soul for all to see and it takes courage. You just never know what reaction you’re going to get when you put yourself out there. Will you get negative comments? Will people think I’m being too salesy? Or worse still, will I get crickets?
But the thing is, ‘creating’ is my self-care. I think of it like my superpower. I MUST create for my own wellbeing. And the buzz I get when I fulfill my mantra of ‘my art sparking joy for others’ is an amazing bonus that I just can’t get enough of!
My other mantra as you may or may not know, is ‘never stop dreaming!’ So with those two beautiful thoughts in mind, I create something daily. Whether it’s a quick scribble, an inspirational photo, an affirming love note to myself, or a batch of cookies for my family, I just need to create. I think it’s how us humans are wired…we’re naturally and instinctively creative. Even if we don’t think we are.
My beautiful sister Helen, who passed away from cancer in 2013, never thought she was creative. She always used to tell me how creative I am and was so encouraging to me. But when I told her that she was creative herself, she didn’t agree. She actually did the most amazing and extraordinary types of crafts though – like quilling and tatting (which you would probably have to google to know what I’m talking about, that’s how out-of-the-ordinary a craft they are), weaving, knitting, crocheting and deliciously sweet baking!
All of that, plus she had a secretly wicked eye for fashion … she knew what a stunning pop of red lippie could do for any outfit, managed to find the best thrift shop treasures to make a space look a million dollars and could even have dabbled in personal styling and organising, I reckon … I remember many a fun time when she’d lounge on my bed to help organise my wardrobe, watching me try on things and asking with that cheeky smile of hers, ‘What on earth were you thinking?’ She was actually a very early adopter of Colour Analysis and told me that I was definitely a ‘Winter’ like her. Suffice to say, I got rid of a lot of questionable items of clothing thanks to my clever big sis, and we laughed A LOT in the process!
I can see her creativity and talent in her wonderful kids – they’re able to do anything they put their hands to. And I wish she could have seen her beautiful grandbabies and how clever and creative they are! I grew up watching all of her creativity and she was an inspiration to me in so many ways. I wish she knew.
All this to say, tap into your creativity! I really believe it will nourish your soul. In the hustle and bustle of life, where every moment seems to be consumed by deadlines, responsibilities and the constant ping of notifications, it’s easy to forget to take care of ourselves. We can neglect one of the most vital aspects of our being—our creative soul. And if you have kids, or people who look up to you, model this type of self-care to them too. It’s a great legacy to leave.
Amidst the chaos, there really does exist a sanctuary, a magical haven where our spirits can soar and find solace—and it’s in the world of ‘creating’, in whatever form brings you joy.
Whether it’s painting on a canvas, sewing a quilt, sculpting clay, or knitting a cosy winter scarf, engaging in creative pursuits is like offering a gentle balm to our weary souls. It’s a form of self-care that transcends the mundane, allowing us to tap into the depths of our imagination and express ourselves in ways that words often fail to capture.
For me, creating art and pattern designs is a journey of self-discovery. With each brushstroke or pencil line, I delve deeper into the recesses of my mind, unearthing hidden emotions, untold stories and forgotten dreams. It’s a therapeutic process that enables me to confront my fears and embrace my vulnerabilities, all while fostering a sense of empowerment and resilience.
I learnt this the hard way really – when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39. It’s a good few years ago now, and it was a challenging time to say the least, but something great came out of it. I found that art could be my therapy and it has been ever since.
The act of making art or crafting is inherently meditative. As we immerse ourselves in the rhythm of creation, our minds quieten and our worries fade into the background. We become fully present in the moment, savouring the tactile sensation of paint on our fingertips or the rhythmic click of needles. It’s a form of mindfulness that anchors us to the here and now, offering respite from the incessant chatter of our thoughts.
Moreover, art and crafting have the power to connect us with others on a profound level. Whether it’s attending a pottery class with friends, joining a quilting circle, or participating in an online art community, these shared experiences foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie. We bond over our shared passion for creativity, supporting each other through the highs and lows of the creative process.
But perhaps most importantly, engaging in art and crafting brings joy into our lives. There’s a unique sense of satisfaction that comes from transforming raw materials into something beautiful and meaningful. Whether it’s a vibrant painting that captures the essence of a fleeting moment, a hand-sewn garment imbued with love and care, or a meticulously crafted piece of jewellery that sparkles with brilliance, each creation is a testament to our creativity and ingenuity.
So, if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or depleted, I encourage you to pick up a paintbrush, thread a needle, or model a lump of clay. Allow yourself the gift of creation. Let go of perfectionism and embrace the process. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a complete beginner, there’s no right or wrong way to create. The act of making art is a celebration of the human spirit—a reminder that amidst the chaos of life, there exists beauty, joy and infinite possibilities.
Remember, never stop dreaming!
