DON’T LET FEAR STOP YOU

Isn’t it incredible how art allows us to express our feelings, thoughts and dreams in the most magical way? But, sometimes we let fear creep in to stop us. We might think, I’m not good enough, my creations are crappy, or who cares about what I have to say?

Today, I’m here to give you permission to give yourself permission to just do whatever it is you feel like doing when it comes to your creativity!  I can tell you from my own experience that creativity is healing. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 39 years of age, art saved me. It was my therapy, helped me to calm my mind and literally pulled me up from some really dark holes. Truly, I’m not sure where my headspace would be today if it wasn’t for my creative soul and letting it roam free.

Why let fear stop you?

You know what’s funny? Fear is like that unexpected guest who crashes your party – who invited them anyway?!  Let’s be real – the act of creating art and putting it out into the world is pretty scary. Whether you’re embarking on a brand-new artistic project, bravely trying out a fresh and unfamiliar medium, or delving into themes and subjects you’ve never explored before – it can be nerve-wracking. I’ve actually got a huge canvas sitting on my easel that is still completely blank, after about 2 months.  So I know all about the fear. But I know that eventually I will pick up that paint brush and just go for it. And the joy will be exhilarating and worth all the nerves that built up to get there. I’ve done it so many times, that’s how I know the creative cycle: Fear – push through the fear – joy!

But it’s not just fear of the unknown and nerves that are the problem.  Some of us might feel that we’re not ‘naturally talented’ enough to be an artist. Or we’re afraid of what others might say or think about our creations. But really, who cares? If our creations spark joy for us, why do we need to worry? There’s always so much going on in the world that is heart-wrenching, scary, sickening, that who knows …what if your creation sparks just one tiny flicker of joy in someone’s day…wouldn’t it all be worth it?

So what’s the Game Plan?

  1. Be Kind To Yourself: Let’s make a pact to be our own best friends on this creative journey we call life. We’re all in this whirlwind of learning and growing together – and we all make mistakes …that’s part of being human. So, how about we swap out that nagging self-criticism for a big, warm hug of self-compassion? You, my friend, are a marvellous work in progress, and guess what? Every single mistake is just another stepping stone towards joy. So let’s embrace it all, the fear, the joy and all the mistakes in between!
  2. Keep It Real, Not Perfect: The pursuit of perfection is like chasing a unicorn. And as far as I’m aware, unicorns don’t exist in real life. Instead of setting ourselves up for an unattainable quest, let’s flip the script. How about setting some realistic goals that allow you to savour every milestone achieved? Remember, it’s not about becoming the next Picasso overnight; it’s about enjoying the scenic route and revelling in the little victories along the way. Because, let’s be honest, it’s the journey that truly counts.
  3. Cheers To Our Tribe: Surrounding yourself with a tribe of like-minded peeps who double as your personal cheerleaders is a game-changer! Seek out those wonderful buddies who’ll egg you on, shower you with support and keep those positive vibes perpetually high. Whether you find your creative allies within your current social group, or in a local art workshop, or buzzing online community, connecting with kindred spirits can infuse your journey with sunlight and laughter.
  4. Get Your Hands Dirty: Let’s dive into a whirlpool of experimentation. Ever thought about embracing a multitude of mediums and techniques? This is your invitation to get hands-on with an array of artistic tools – from watercolours to clay sculpting and everything in between. Guess what? Each experiment adds a new hue to your creative palette and helps you discover exciting facets of your artistic prowess. Oh, and don’t forget – those ‘happy accidents’ can often become your most stunning masterpieces!
  5. Chase the Journey, Not the Destination: Here’s a secret: the magic lies in the process, not just the end result. By shifting your focus from the pressure of creating a perfect masterpiece to relishing every step you take along the way, you’ll find a newfound freedom. It’s like turning on a switch that illuminates your artistic path with joy, curiosity and a sense of adventure. Remember, it’s the art-venture that makes this journey so utterly special!

Wrapping It Up and an Exciting Announcement

And what’s the announcement, you ask?
